Summer 2021, I completed a remote internship with Concord, MA-based publisher Barefoot Books. They create a variety of whimsical, unique children’s books, with a special emphasis on stories from BIPOC and underrepresented voices. It was a real treat to learn about publishing at this company.
Cleo the Cat Books
Three of the Cleo the Cat board books that I worked on during my internship at Barefoot Books. These books were previously published but were undergoing a re-publishing with updated design and illustrations. I was in charge of working on the covers and spines to help with the refresh. I created the pattern for the spines (leaves, butterflies, and paw prints) by isolating artwork from the book in Adobe Photoshop and creating a pattern. I adjusted the cover on Cleo’s Adventure to choose a new pose for Cleo. I also worked heavily on the title type – Barefoot Books was making edits to the titles and they needed to be changed to match the artist’s original hand-painted lettering. To achieve this, I added patterns and edited fonts in Photoshop to match the original designs.
Barefoot Books Website Background
The Barefoot Books website changes its pattern to match the seasons. In Summer 2021, I was in charge of creating the background pattern for the website’s summer update (left). I was also tasked with working on the Fall 2021 update (right). My internship ended before the Fall 2021 update could be completed, but my pattern was ultimately used as the base design for the final product. I created these patterns in Adobe Photoshop by isolating images from some of Barefoot’s recently published children’s books and creating a cute pattern that worked as a background image without becoming overwhelming to the eyes.
Social Media Graphics
Examples of social media graphics created for Barefoot Books. Each of these utilized Barefoot’s square border to stay unified within their brand but pulled graphics, illustrations, and type from various Barefoot children’s books.
Marketing Graphics
Some examples of marketing designs that I created during my internship. These included Amazon A+ advertisements, eCampaign marketing graphics, e-mail blast graphics, and more. Creating these graphics required me to match existing design guidelines for Barefoot Books itself, as well as for the individual books being advertised. Each book had its own style and brand, so this was a real adventure in design!
